History to Shanghai Street Style Series
In 2011 Intellect Books approached Vicki Karaminas and asked her if she would be willing to do a street style book.
Vicki (then Exec Director of Popular Culture Association of Australasia) called me and we talked. I happened to be going to Taiwan as the keynote speaker for the new South East Asia Popular Culture Association. And, as those of you who know your geography know, Taiwain is a skip and a jump from Shanghai. It meant that we could save on airfares. Soit was decided that I would spend ten days in Shanghai gathering the shots and gathering the data (ie interviewing).
We found a fantastic photographer Fung Chan throuigh our favourite Hong Kong colleague Anne Pierson-Smith.
Armed with a list of questions and a few local contacts, I landed in Shanghai in September 2011. I met with Eike Stratmann (who publishes the ultimate guides to Shanghai art galleries and fashion hotspots in her Detour Maps) in the bar of the wonderful Langham Hotel. (Shot of a typical Langham room taken from its website).
Next day Fung and I were off to explore the s/teaming streets of Shanghai.
